On Saturday, June 17 the Hōkūle‘a will return home to Hawaii after a three-year long voyage around the world. The occasion marks the culmination of the incredible Malama Honua Worldwide voyage on which the canoe sailed approximately 40,000 nautical miles, visited more than 150 ports and shared stores of hope and inspiration with more than 100,000 people.
The momentous occasion will take place at Magic Island on Oahu from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm, with the arrival of Hōkūle‘a into the marina at 9:00 am. In addition to Hōkūle‘a, additional local voyaging canoes as well as two canoes from the Pacific voyaging community and Hikianalia will also sail into the marina between 7:00 am and 9:00 am.
Hōkūle‘a, which set sail on her first voyage to Tahiti from Hawai‘i in 1976, reawakened the Native Hawaiian culture by embracing its seafaring heritage around the Pacific. Far more than just a voyaging canoe – Hōkūle‘a represents the common desire shared by the people of Hawaii, the Pacific and the world to protect our most cherished values and places from disappearing.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts in Hawaii and Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts LP proudly supported the Malama Honua Worldwide voyage through monetary and in-kind donations.
